Recent incidents affecting merchant shipping, including Malta flagged vessels, underline the increasingly complex and challenging environment in which civilian vessels and, above all, seafarers are required to operate.
In this context, the Malta International Shipowners’ Association (MISA) has issued a statement expressing grave concern over recent attacks on commercial shipping and operations. The statement reaffirms the paramount importance of seafarer safety, freedom of navigation and strict adherence to international maritime law, and aligns with the position expressed by the Maltese authorities.
While shipowners continue to strengthen risk assessments and operational safeguards, recent events also highlight the limits of what the industry, acting alone, can address. Ensuring the safety of civilian shipping requires enhanced international coordination and a shared commitment to uphold the fundamental principles that underpin global maritime trade.
MISA will continue to work closely with its members, the Maltese authorities and international partners to promote maritime safety, protect seafarers and support the stability and integrity of global shipping.
