The IMO International Day for Women in Maritime is an important moment to reflect on progress made — and the work still needed — to ensure a more inclusive, representative, and sustainable maritime sector.

To mark this occasion, the Malta International Shipowners’ Association (MISA shared a LinkedIn post highlighting the article “Making waves. Charting a new course for women”, which brings together perspectives from two leading figures in global shipping: Karin Orsel, recipient of the 2025 IMO Gender Equality Award, and Claudia Vella Casagrande, Secretary General of MISA. This article was also reported on the Times of Malta.

The discussion explores the realities faced by women in maritime — both at sea and ashore — and the structural changes required to attract, retain, and support female talent across the industry. While awareness has grown, women continue to represent a minority of the maritime workforce, particularly in operational and leadership roles.

The article moves beyond symbolic recognition, calling for practical action:

• greater visibility of female role models,

• stronger mentorship and leadership pathways,

• targeted training and upskilling opportunities, and

• workplace cultures that support diversity and inclusion in a meaningful way.

At MISA, we strongly believe that gender equality is not only a social imperative, but also a strategic one. As shipping navigates major transitions — from decarbonisation to digitalisation — the sector’s resilience and competitiveness will depend on its ability to draw on the widest possible talent pool.

Marking the IMO International Day for Women in Maritime is therefore not just about recognition, but about commitment — to sustained effort, measurable progress, and collective responsibility across the maritime community.
