The Directorate would like to remind all concerned that the Malta International Shipowners Association (MISA) is the association of owners and bareboat charterers of Maltese ships. MISA is a voluntary not for profit organisation, established in 2004. Its main objective is to foster and protect the interests of its members, both nationally and internationally, whilst promoting the interests of the Malta international shipping industry and further consolidating the reputation of the Malta Flag, now the largest ship registry in Europe. Membership compliments registration under the Malta flag, demonstrating a genuine link with Malta that goes beyond economic or operational necessity. Current membership represents a substantial amount of tonnage of various types of ships operated by reputable owners of high stature from several countries. It is a national association, and international in nature. In Malta the Association is a corporate member of the Malta Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise and Industry, the Malta Maritime Forum and the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (Malta Branch). Internationally MISA is an active member of the European Community Shipowners’ Association and an Affiliate Member of the International Chamber of Shipping. The Association is administered by a secretariat based in Malta. In order to have an effective representation as a non-profit organisation, it generates funds from its members and shipowners operating under the Malta flag. With the ever-evolving importance of effective representation, shipowners, ship managers and operators operating under the Malta flag are encouraged to seek membership with MISA. Saving this, they are encouraged to make an annual voluntary contribution to MISA of € 200. This Directorate believes in a healthy dialogue and an effective contribution on pertinent issues impacting the shipping industry and supports a voice that represents the interests of the industry when drawing up its policies to further consolidate Malta as a maritime jurisdiction of choice. To this effect, all involved are urged to play a more active role in ensuring that MISA has the necessary resources to be better placed to represent the interest of the industry. MISA membership is on a per ship basis and the voluntary contribution is payable on an annual basis on the anniversary registration date of the ship under the Malta flag.
